This answer depends on which chiropractor you ask. I believe an adjustment is a specific force applied to a bone in the spine to correct a subluxation.
What is a subluxation? - A subluxation is the misalignment of a bone in the spine to the extent that it begins to interfere with nerve function.
While particular areas in the spine can be tender, the techniques such as Blair Upper Cervical and Activator are light force techniques. Patients are more commonly surprised by how small the force actually is.
Blair upper cervical technique is amongst the safest in the chiropractic field. There is no twisting or rotation of the neck and the force is very specific. The adjustment is around 10 square foot pounds of pressure. The drop table mechanism allows the force to be amplified without the need to apply excessive force.
I commonly see newborn patients. The average amount of pressure on a baby's neck in a normal vaginal birth is 60lbs of pressure! C-sections can get up to 120 pounds of pressure. If your child is failing to thrive, they should be checked for misalignments in the neck. The oldest patient I have seen was 102. Chiropractic is for people of all ages!
That's a great question! In order to answer it, it's important to understand 90% of the nerve is related other functions aside from pain. Only 10% of the nerve fiber is responsible for pain. It is possible to lose function without experiencing any pain. Some common things often not associated with a subluxation: nausea, dizziness, digestive issues, numbness/tingling, visual disturbances, rising in the ears, balance issues, insomnia, narcolepsy, epilepsy, skin rashes, and many more. The short answer is no. The best way to answer is to compare something that we've accepted as common-place. Most people are aware they need to get regular checkups at the dentist to maintain their teeth. How much more important is your nervous system? Long-term chiropractic care is always going to be good for your health, finding a frequency that works for you is where the answer lies.
Every program of care is designed exclusively for you. The doctor will recommend a program of care based off a thorough examination. Ultimately, it is your decision to choose to follow the recommendation or create your own frequency.
This is by far the most common question asked. The most commonly thought of way is the first of the three T's.
This is the quickest way to ruin an adjustment. We must first understand what's happening. When you twist you own neck or back in order to get the desired relief from a pop, what happens is that the bone that ends up moving is the one that is already hyper-mobile. Hyper-mobility is a big problem because it causes the spine to be unstable. What happens is you still get relief since there are neurotransmitters released from the joint when it happens. As most people who self-manipulate can attest to, minutes later you are left feeling the need to do the same thing again. Find someone who can perform a specific adjustment to the bone that is stuck, so that the entire spine can function like it was designed to.
